UAE and Cyprus Forge Strategic Alliance During Historic Presidential Visit

Abu dhabi: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Republic of Cyprus have issued a joint statement marking a significant milestone in their bilateral relations during the official visit of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Cyprus. This visit is historic as it is the first by an Emirati President to Cyprus, underscoring the strategic depth of the partnership between the two nations.

According to Emirates News Agency, the visit was warmly welcomed by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides. The collaboration aims to elevate their strategic partnership with a focus on trade, investments, and energy cooperation. Both nations have agreed to develop a Joint Action Plan to enhance bilateral cooperation, overseen by their respective foreign ministries.

The visit facilitated discussions on various sectors, including energy cooperation, renewable energy, interconnectivity, defense, infrastructure, and maritime cooperation. The UAE's business delegation and the Cyprus-UAE Business roundtable further explored strategic trade and investment opportunities.

President Christodoulides updated on Cyprus' upcoming EU Council Presidency in 2026, focusing on the EU's Southern Neighborhood and EU-GCC relations. The upcoming 2nd Investment and Finance Forum in Abu Dhabi and an Energy Conference are expected to open new investment avenues.

The joint statement also reiterated the commitment to resolving the Cyprus question based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation. The UAE affirmed its support for Cyprus's sovereignty, while Cyprus backed the UAE's claims over the islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa, urging peaceful dispute resolution.

Both leaders recognized the humanitarian significance of the Amalthea Cyprus Maritime Corridor for Gaza and pledged continued cooperation to support the Palestinian people. They emphasized adherence to UN Security Council resolution 2803 and a two-State solution for lasting peace.

In addressing extremism, the leaders committed to promoting tolerance and interreligious dialogue, with Cyprus proposing the establishment of an Interfaith Institute for Peaceful Coexistence. They also called for a humanitarian truce in Sudan and supported efforts for a peaceful transition there.

The discussions also covered the war in Ukraine, with both nations supporting a comprehensive peace solution respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity. The UAE and Cyprus have played active roles in humanitarian efforts and dialogue facilitation.

The statement concludes by reaffirming the strategic partnership between the UAE and Cyprus, highlighting progress in areas like trade, energy, tourism, and education, aiming for deeper cooperation in the future.
