Abu dhabi: The United Arab Emirates and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia have solidified their strategic partnership during high-level discussions held on 6th January 2026. The discussions occurred during the working visit of Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State, highlighting the depth of mutual respect and cooperation that characterizes the UAE-Ethiopia relationship.
According to Emirates News Agency, both nations emphasized their commitment to each other's peace, security, and economic interests. The meeting served as a platform to review regional and international peace and security developments, with both parties expressing a shared commitment to promoting stability and advancing lasting peace.
The two countries recalled the High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan, co-hosted by the UAE, Ethiopia, IGAD, and the AU in February 2025. This conference successfully mobilized regional and international support to address Sudan's humanitarian crisis. The UAE and Ethiopia condemned attacks on civilians by warring parties and stressed the need for their protection, calling for a humanitarian truce leading to a permanent ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian access throughout Sudan.
In addition to regional security, global priorities were also discussed. The UAE welcomed Ethiopia's preparations for COP32, agreeing to build on the outcomes of COP28. The UAE expressed its readiness to collaborate with Ethiopia for the successful delivery of an ambitious climate agenda at COP32.
Both nations also highlighted the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference, co-hosted by the UAE and Senegal, to be held in the UAE. This conference aims to accelerate the implementation of SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). They acknowledged the UAE's efforts in advancing water technology and innovation, emphasizing cooperation in sustainable water solutions.
The discussions underscored a shared commitment to advancing peace, addressing regional stability challenges, and reinforcing the strength of the longstanding UAE-Ethiopia strategic partnership.
