UAE and Universal Rights Group Discuss UN80 Reform at Geneva Session

Geneva: The Permanent Mission of the UAE to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, in partnership with the Universal Rights Group (URG), recently held the second session of the Wednesday Exchange. This majlis-style, Chatham House Rule discussion focused on the implications of the UN Secretary-General's UN80 reform proposals for the human rights framework in Geneva.

According to Emirates News Agency, Jamal Al Musharakh, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, underscored the Wednesday Exchange's role as an informal platform for candid engagement at a critical time for the multilateral system. He emphasized the UAE's dedication to fostering communication channels that enhance cross-regional dialogue and cooperation.

The session featured participation from Nada Al-Nashif, Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, who provided insights on how the UN80 proposals align with efforts to improve coherence, efficiency, and impact across the UN's human rights framework in Geneva. A diverse group of Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives from various regions participated, indicating strong interest among Member States in the UN80 reform proposals and their potential influence on the UN human rights system.

Participants shared perspectives on how the UN80 reforms could strengthen Geneva's role as a global hub for human rights expertise, promote system-wide coherence, and deliver meaningful outcomes for communities worldwide. The discussion also emphasized the need for a more accessible, coordinated, and implementation-focused human rights framework.

The UAE reiterated its commitment to supporting inclusive dialogue, mutual understanding, and collaborative approaches to building a resilient multilateral system in light of the UN80 reform proposals. The Wednesday Exchange, a joint initiative of the UAE Mission and URG, aims to continue providing a platform for cross-regional engagement on the future of the UN human rights system and broader multilateral reforms.
