Abu dhabi: The UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has announced the launch of a new series of analytical reports titled 'A Closer Look: Civil Aviation in the UAE,' aimed at providing detailed insights into the transformative developments within the nation's civil aviation sector. This initiative is part of the GCAA's ongoing commitment to transparency and aims to spotlight the UAE's strategic approach in establishing itself as a global aviation hub.
According to Emirates News Agency, the series will focus on the UAE's milestones, challenges, and future opportunities in civil aviation, underpinned by robust infrastructure that includes high-capacity international airports, modern air navigation systems, and a flexible airspace design. The UAE's aviation ecosystem also comprises aircraft manufacturing, sustainable aviation fuel producers, and advanced logistics, all contributing to the sector's efficiency.
The UAE's civil aviation journey began as a refueling stopover in Sharjah during the 1930s and took a significant leap forward in 1960 with the establishment of Dubai Airport. Over the decades, the UAE has strengthened its aviation infrastructure with the development of major airports, including Abu Dhabi International Airport, now Zayed International Airport, and others across the Emirates.
The UAE's air transport sector has evolved into a sophisticated global system, featuring 12 certified airports, 100 heliports, 35 UAE registered air operators, and 383 foreign operators. The nation has signed 189 bilateral air transport agreements, enhancing its connectivity to 304 airports in 109 countries. From 2014 to 2024, the UAE's international air connectivity index increased significantly.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) notes that the UAE's aviation sector contributes more than USD 92 billion annually to the national economy, directly impacting 18% of GDP. The sector supports approximately 206,800 direct jobs, with a broader economic footprint sustaining 991,500 jobs across related industries.
The UAE is also a critical player in international trade, moving 4.36 million tonnes of cargo annually, ranking as the seventh-largest air cargo market globally. Beyond economic contributions, the sector advances UN Sustainable Development Goals, facilitates cultural exchange, and provides access to education and healthcare.
The UAE's aviation sector exemplifies how strategic investment in air transport infrastructure fosters sustainable economic and social development, securing a prosperous future for the nation.
