Dubai: The UAE has solidified its position as a leading global maritime hub, leveraging a robust framework of achievements, progressive legislation, and strategic investments to set a benchmark in maritime sustainability, advanced infrastructure, and governance.
According to Emirates News Agency, the UAE's strategic location at the heart of global trade routes has enabled it to become a pivotal logistics hub, bridging Eastern and Western markets. The country has actively contributed to international maritime policies, focusing on updating legal frameworks to prevent illegal practices such as fraudulent ship registration and developing regulations for autonomous maritime vessels.
The UAE boasts one of the most advanced maritime infrastructures in the region, with ports handling around 21 million TEUs in 2023. This achievement underscores the sector's significant contribution of approximately AED135 billion to the national GDP. The UAE's comprehensive services and advanced digital systems make it the leading destination for commercial vessels in the region.
The UAE has prioritized human capital development in the maritime sector, organizing specialized training workshops with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and establishing maritime academies like the Sharjah Maritime Academy. These institutions have graduated approximately 497 marine officers and engineers, including 100 female officers.
As part of its environmental commitment, the UAE has announced its Net Zero 2050 Strategy, implementing sustainable solutions in the maritime sector. Initiatives like Fujairah Port's clean fuel and LNG services align with the MARPOL Convention. The UAE's involvement in the Global Ports Hydrogen Coalition and the Green Shipping Corridors Alliance further highlights its leadership in sustainable maritime practices.
The UAE is at the forefront of digital and smart system development in maritime shipping, launching projects such as Blue Pass, Maqta Gateway, and CargoSpeed. These technologies enhance supply chain efficiency and logistical automation while reducing carbon emissions.
UAE companies have extended their maritime investments to over 78 countries, operating 106 ports worldwide and advancing global trade connectivity. The UAE's national strategy aligns with IMO objectives, supporting decarbonization and inclusivity in maritime transport.
The UAE has also become a global convenor for international maritime conferences, fostering innovation and dialogue on sustainable maritime transport. Participation in COP conferences and BRICS meetings further emphasizes its leadership in promoting a low-emission maritime future.
Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, expressed confidence in the UAE's progression toward being a global maritime power, citing the vision of the country's leadership and ongoing efforts in the sector.
