Abu Dhabi: UAE's aviation sector is on the cusp of a groundbreaking transformation as Archer Aviation gears up to conduct the first trial flights of its fully electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, 'Midnight,' before the end of 2025. Dr. Talib Alhinai, General Manager of Archer Aviation, revealed this development during the 'Make it in the Emirates' forum, highlighting the aircraft's pivotal role in advancing the nation's urban air mobility ambitions.
According to Emirates News Agency, Archer Aviation has recently inaugurated a manufacturing facility in Georgia, USA, with an initial production capacity of 650 aircraft per annum. Plans are underway to increase this capacity to 2,400 aircraft annually. The company is also eyeing potential manufacturing opportunities in the UAE, having signed a framework agreement with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office to set up a research center and explore local production.
Midnight is designed for sustainable urban transport, capable of carrying four passengers and a pilot. It operates entirely on electric power and features vertical takeoff and landing capabilities akin to a helicopter. Its design is optimized for efficient short-distance flights, aiming to revolutionize urban commuting.
Initial test flights are slated to occur in unpopulated areas, with a gradual expansion into urban zones as part of a phased deployment strategy. Although the exact date for the commencement of commercial services remains undetermined, it will be announced once all technical and operational prerequisites are met.
On the technical front, Midnight is equipped with a fixed wing and 12 electric motors, six positioned at the front and six at the rear. The front motors have the ability to rotate between 90 and 0 degrees, allowing for a smooth transition from vertical to horizontal flight within 45 seconds.
