UAE to Build First Space-to-Ground Quantum Communication Network

Abu dhabi: The Technology Innovation Institute (TII), part of Abu Dhabi's Advanced Technology Research Council, is collaborating with Space42 to develop the UAE's first space-to-ground quantum communication network. This initiative aims to integrate satellite and ground systems using Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology.

According to Emirates News Agency, the TII-Space42 agreement, signed at the Dubai Airshow, marks a strategic advancement in the UAE's quantum communication efforts. This partnership will facilitate ultra-secure data exchange, enhance cyber resilience, and establish the UAE as a leader in secure digital infrastructure across both terrestrial and extraterrestrial domains.

The collaboration involves the development, testing, and deployment of a space-based QKD solution. This cutting-edge technology utilizes principles of quantum mechanics to achieve unparalleled data security. Building on TII's existing QKD solutions, the partnership will focus on validating secure quantum communication links via satellite, setting the stage for future commercialization of quantum-secure space systems.

Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, commented on the significance of this partnership, emphasizing the combination of TII's research capabilities with Space42's satellite infrastructure. Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Space Services at Space42, highlighted the strategic goal of becoming a global leader in non-terrestrial network solutions through this collaboration.

The TII-Space42 agreement lays out a framework for collaboration in research and development, payload development, satellite integration, and ground infrastructure operations. It also outlines objectives for the design, testing, validation, and in-orbit demonstration of QKD technologies.

Through joint efforts, technical coordination, and knowledge exchange, TII and Space42 aim to accelerate innovation, develop national talent, and position the UAE as a global hub for quantum-secure communications.
