UAE to Play Active Role in Developing 6G Telecommunications Technology

Abu Dhabi:The UAE is committed to actively participating in the development of sixth-generation (6G) telecommunications technology, aiming to contribute to establishing global standards. Dr. Khalid Al Awadhi, Director of Spectrum Planning and Allocation at the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA), emphasized this commitment, highlighting its importance in strengthening the UAE's position in the telecommunications sector and supporting the deployment of advanced technologies for societal benefit.

According to Emirates News Agency, Dr. Al Awadhi made these remarks during the first 6G Summit in the Middle East and North Africa, held in Abu Dhabi. The summit brought together global experts to discuss the potential of 6G, particularly how integrating artificial intelligence into telecommunications networks could enhance efficiency and automate processes.

He further explained that the UAE sees the development of these technologies as an opportunity not only to utilize them but also to actively participate in their design and development, working alongside manufacturers and the global telecommunications sector. Although 6G is still in the research and development stage, with standards being formulated, the UAE is already engaging in understanding and developing the technology. Commercial deployment of 6G networks is anticipated to begin in 2030.

Al Awadhi noted that early involvement allows the UAE to identify capabilities that align with its needs and priorities, ensuring that the technology supports various sectors and maximizes the benefits of advanced solutions. He emphasized the role of the TDRA in supporting telecommunications technologies to benefit both citizens and residents of the UAE, noting that the country ranks first globally in mobile internet speed.

He also highlighted anticipated capabilities of 6G networks, such as the integration of artificial intelligence and built-in sensing capabilities, which could be applied in smart cities and other areas. These features are expected to foster the development of data-driven services and applications reliant on real-time communication. Autonomous vehicles, which require advanced connectivity and object-recognition capabilities, are one example of applications that could benefit from 6G advancements.
