Damascus: With the support of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the UAE has announced the restoration of the historic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. As Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, Sheikha Fatima plays a pivotal role in this initiative.
According to Emirates News Agency, Sheikha Fatima affirmed the humanitarian approach of the Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, underlining his commitment to the values of giving and development. This legacy continues under President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, whose vision for development and cultural preservation drives the UAE's aid initiatives.
The announcement of the mosque's restoration was made during a visit by Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of State, to the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. Al Kaabi highlighted Syria's place in Arab and Islamic civilisation, emphasizing the mosque's cultural significance. The UAE's support for the restoration reflects the importance of shared heritage and underscores its support for the Syrian people.
Al Kaabi stressed the UAE's dedication to preserving history and heritage through cultural initiatives aimed at safeguarding Arab and Islamic heritage. This restoration initiative is part of the UAE's global role in cultural diplomacy and humanitarian efforts. It will include structural rehabilitation of the mosque and revitalization of the surrounding historical area, aligning with Syrian identity and supporting the country's socio-economic fabric.
