UAEREP Launches Seventh Cycle to Advance Rain Enhancement Research

Abu Dhabi:The UAE Research Programme for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP), managed by the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), has unveiled its Seventh Cycle Solicitation Document. This document outlines the latest research priorities and funding framework aimed at advancing rain enhancement science and technologies, particularly for arid regions.

According to Emirates News Agency, the Seventh Cycle will provide a total of US$3 million in funding across up to five awards, with projects lasting between one and three years. Funding categories include up to $500,000 for one-year projects, up to $1 million for two-year projects, and up to $1.5 million for three-year projects.

The programme will focus on five strategic research areas Optimised Seeding Materials; Novel Cloud Formation and/or Rain Enhancement Systems; Autonomous Unmanned Aircraft Systems; Limited-Area Climate Interventions; and Advanced Models, Software and Data. These areas were determined following a review of UAEREP's research thrusts and project outcomes, involving external experts in rain enhancement.

Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, President of the World Meteorological Organisation and Chairman of NCM, emphasized the UAE's commitment to scientific research and international cooperation to enhance water security. The Seventh Cycle aims to encourage international collaboration and the development of practical, science-based solutions to water scarcity.

Dr. Ahmad Al Kamali, Director of UAEREP, highlighted the programme's focus on addressing scientific questions, introducing innovative approaches, and demonstrating practical applications. The cycle encourages multidisciplinary proposals and collaboration with the international research community and UAE institutions.

The new cycle emphasizes advancing research towards operational readiness, with projects expected to move technologies closer to deployment or provide innovative scientific insights. Research under each area will explore various aspects, such as seeding materials' properties, cloud formation, UAS integration, and climate interventions.

UAEREP seeks high-impact projects involving academia, industry, and government collaboration, emphasizing research excellence, measurable outcomes, and capacity building. Applications will undergo a two-stage merit review, focusing on scientific merit, innovation, team capabilities, and resources.

The Seventh Cycle continues UAEREP's strategy to establish technology platforms and verification techniques for rain enhancement and water security in the UAE and globally.
