UAE’s Renewable Energy Capacity Surpasses 7.7 Gigawatts: Minister of Energy and Infrastructure

Abu dhabi: Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, announced that the United Arab Emirates has exceeded 7.7 gigawatts in installed renewable energy capacity. This achievement is part of the UAE's ongoing efforts to enhance its global standing in sustainable energy through a comprehensive national vision and strategic investments aimed at accelerating the shift to clean and renewable energy sources.

According to Emirates News Agency, Al Mazrouei stated during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026 that projects currently under development will increase the total capacity to over 23 gigawatts by 2031. This growth reflects the swift transformation occurring within the national energy system. National investments in renewable and clean energy have reached AED190 billion, underscoring the sector's significance as a key driver of sustainable development and low-emissions economic growth.

Al Mazrouei further explained that the UAE has set a national target to generate 35 percent of its electricity from clean energy sources by 2031. The National Hydrogen Strategy 2050 has been incorporated into the country's comprehensive energy planning framework, enhancing its readiness for a low-carbon energy future. The UAE's installed renewable energy capacity grew by 117 percent between 2022 and 2025, showcasing the success of national policies and strategic projects aimed at creating a sustainable and efficient energy system.

He also highlighted that national consumption efficiency programs, initiated by the National Water and Energy Demand Management Programme in 2020, have reduced carbon emissions by over 14.8 million tonnes and resulted in financial savings exceeding US$2 billion over five years. These initiatives are part of a broader national strategy to reduce energy consumption by 43 percent and water consumption by 50 percent by 2050.

Al Mazrouei emphasized the UAE's commitment to achieving long-term sustainability and diversification in the energy sector while accelerating the transition to clean energy sources. The UAE is recognized as the fastest-growing market for clean and renewable energy in the region. The minister stressed the country's aim to reach a net-zero future by advancing technologies and developing modern solutions for the energy sector. Efforts are also being made to establish hydrogen as a reliable global energy source, leveraging the UAE's traditional hydrogen production capabilities and technological resources.
