UN Security Council Urges Commitment to Libyan-Led Political Process

New york: The members of the UN Security Council have called on Libyan institutional stakeholders to engage fully, transparently, and in good faith, without preconditions, to advance a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned process. Facilitated by the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), this initiative seeks to foster necessary compromises, with the international community urged to support the process.

According to Emirates News Agency, the Security Council members welcomed a briefing by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), Hanna Tetteh. The briefing outlined a road map aiming to conclude the transitional period and progress towards unified institutions. It also seeks to guide the country towards free, fair, transparent, and inclusive presidential and legislative elections, as outlined in Security Council resolution 2755 (2024), within an 18-month time frame. In parallel, the plan includes convening a structured dialogue involving Libyan institutional stakeholders and the Libyan populace.

The Security Council members expressed concern over Libya's fragile security environment and emphasized the importance of maintaining security and stability across the nation. They urged all Libyan parties to uphold the 2020 ceasefire agreement and refrain from any unilateral actions that could jeopardize the fragile security situation and the safety of civilians.

The Security Council members also praised the recent conclusion of Municipal Council Elections in 34 Libyan municipalities, commending the High National Elections Commission for its efforts. They noted the suspension of local elections in some municipalities and reiterated the importance of ensuring full, equal, meaningful, and safe participation of women in the political process.
