UNIDIR to Launch Unique Forum on AI in International Peace and Security

Geneva:The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) Centre of Excellence on AI, Peace and Security is set to launch a groundbreaking multi-stakeholder forum on artificial intelligence (AI) in international peace and security, as well as in the military domain. This initiative marks the first and only forum of its kind within the UN system.

According to Wam, UNIDIR Director Robin Geiss outlined the forum's primary focus areas, which include developing a framework for responsible industry behavior. This framework will consist of practical, voluntary guidelines for companies to follow during the design and development stages of AI military tools.

Another key focus of the forum will be the creation of an 'AI security lexicon.' This lexicon aims to clarify key concepts such as autonomy, safety, and security, which are currently interpreted differently by various stakeholders, thus creating ambiguity that can hinder trust and cooperation.

The forum will also address the risks associated with the misuse of AI by non-State armed groups, particularly in support of operational planning, execution, and logistics.
