Abu dhabi: The Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Sphere Entertainment Co. (NYSE: SPHR) have announced the selection of Yas Island as the site for Sphere Abu Dhabi, a landmark project with a construction phase cost of USD 1.7 billion. This venue is set to become a global icon, attracting tourists from around the world and bolstering economic diversification while enhancing Abu Dhabi's cultural identity.
According to Emirates News Agency, Sphere Abu Dhabi will be the first Sphere venue outside the United States, located between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. The site will feature lush green surroundings and proximity to other Yas Island attractions, with construction expected to conclude by the end of 2029. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, emphasized the long-term vision behind the project, highlighting the emirate's commitment to world-class experiences and international partnerships.
James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, noted the significance of Abu Dhabi as a cultural and infrastructural hub, making it an ideal location for the first step in their global network of venues. Sphere Abu Dhabi is envisioned to establish Yas Island as a premier destination for immersive experiences.
The venue will host diverse events powered by Sphere's advanced technologies, including immersive productions, concert residencies, and a variety of marquee and brand events. These offerings will reflect Abu Dhabi's role as a cultural crossroads, featuring Emirati culture and heritage alongside global entertainment.
Located near Zayed International Airport, Sphere Abu Dhabi will serve as a gateway to the emirate's cultural and entertainment offerings. Its proximity to Yas Island's infrastructure will further cement the island's status as a global events destination, complementing major events such as the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The world's first Sphere venue opened in Las Vegas in September 2023. Sphere Abu Dhabi will follow this model, offering an experiential medium powered by advanced technologies, with a capacity of up to 20,000. The venue's operations are expected to create thousands of local jobs.
Sphere Abu Dhabi represents a key milestone in Abu Dhabi's integrated destination development and will function as a global tourism magnet. DCT Abu Dhabi is coordinating with various entities to ensure the seamless integration of infrastructure and access on Yas Island.
