5.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Maluku Province in Indonesia

An earthquake measuring 5.8 magnitude on the Richter scale struck Monday Maluku Province, eastern Indonesia. Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said in a statement that the epicenter of the earthquake was 50 km from the Seram Island in the province and at a depth of 14 km. There have been no reports of material damage or human losses due to the earthquake so far. Indonesia is regularly exposed to earthquakes, as it is located on the Pacific belt known as the Ring of Fire, where many tectonic plates meet and cause frequent volcanic and seismic activity.
