Abu Dhabi:The Department of Energy - Abu Dhabi (DoE) and Evolve Fuels AG, a Smartenergy Group company, have entered into a strategic collaboration to explore the production of synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) in Abu Dhabi. This agreement was signed at ADIPEC 2026, focusing on investment opportunities and the potential development of e-SAF.
According to Wam, the collaboration will involve connecting potential Abu Dhabi investors with Evolve Fuels' international project pipeline, supporting policy and regulatory development for e-SAF, and exploring a strategy for e-SAF production in the Emirate. The joint effort aims to assess the technical and commercial feasibility of producing e-SAF, leveraging Abu Dhabi's renewable energy, hydrogen, and carbon capture resources.
The agreement outlines the assessment of infrastructure and technology needs, identifying industry partners and potential customers, and exploring opportunities for investment and technology transfers. A joint steering committee will oversee potential initiatives and projects. This initiative aligns with the aviation industry's efforts to reduce emissions and meet the rising demand for sustainable fuels.
e-SAF, produced using renewable electricity, hydrogen, and captured carbon dioxide, is gaining attention as Europe and the UK implement new fuel requirements. This creates investment opportunities and the development of production capabilities. The collaboration is seen as a chance for Abu Dhabi to explore new industrial development avenues, attract investment, and enhance its clean energy and technology capabilities.
Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Obaidli, Director-General of Regulatory Affairs at the DoE, highlighted the potential of sustainable aviation fuel in aviation's future and the importance of building regulatory and commercial foundations for competitive and valuable projects. Horst H. Mahmoudi, CEO and Executive Chairman of Smartenergy, emphasized Evolve Fuels' role in aggregating and accelerating e-SAF projects, aiming to establish Abu Dhabi as a significant global player.
The next phase will focus on identifying priority opportunities and assessing requirements for potential projects, with future investments subject to further evaluation and agreements, ensuring alignment with market demand and Abu Dhabi's industrial priorities.
