Around 90 delegations from Europe, Arab world, UN institutions and international financial organizations have until now confirmed their participation in the seventh Brussels ministerial conference on Syria on Thursday, senior EU officials told journalists here Monday.
"Registration is still open so it could change in the next few days, " said the officials speaking on condition of anonymity, adding that foreign ministers from Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq are among those who have confirmed.
The 2-day conference titled 'Supporting the future of Syria and the region' is being hosted by the European Union on Wednesday and Thursday.
The ministerial will be opened by EU High Representative Josep Borrell followed by interventions by representatives from the countries of the region, which are hosting a large number of Syrian refugees like Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt.
There are three main objectives of the conference. First to express the support of the EU towards a political solution to the Syrian crisis in line with the UNSC resolution 2254.
The second objective is to support the Syrian people through pledges, as the Syrian crisis is deepening every day and the situation for the people is becoming more and more difficult, they noted.
The third objective is to mobilize the Syrian civil society towards a solution to the Syrian crisis There will be a Day of Dialogue with the participation of hundreds of civil society representatives as well as cultural events on Wednesday at the European Parliament in Brussels.
On the effect of the return of Syria to the Arab League on the Brussels conference, the officials said they do not see much link "in the sense that the needs of the Syrian crisis are very huge and important." Commenting on the possible effect on the Syrian pledging conference due to the focus of the international community on the Ukraine war, violence and fighting in Sudan and the turmoil in Pakistan m the EU officials said, "This is one of the reasons we want to have this Brussels conference." "We want to make sure that the Syrian crisis is not forgotten and we can keep Syria on the agenda of the International community," they stressed.
