European Commission to Launch Strategic Negotiations with GCC Countries

Brussels: The European Commission and the High Representative expressed their approval of the European Council's recent decision to authorize negotiations with each of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries for bilateral Strategic Partnership Agreements (SPAs).

According to Emirates News Agency, the SPAs aim to establish a modern and comprehensive framework for cooperation, aligned with the shared priorities of the EU and each GCC partner. This initiative supports the objectives outlined in the 2022 Joint Communication on a Strategic Partnership with the Gulf and the upcoming 2024 EU-GCC Summit in Brussels.

The negotiation frameworks will cover diverse topics, such as foreign and security policy, trade and investment, energy, digital transformation, and education. These agreements are intended to elevate the EU's relationship with the GCC countries, addressing mutual challenges and opportunities in the Middle East region.

Negotiations are set to commence promptly, with the pace determined by the interest of the GCC partners. Kaja Kallas, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, emphasized the potential for mutual benefits from these agreements, ranging from economic diversification to enhanced cooperation in various sectors.

According to Maroš Šefcovic, Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security; Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency, the SPAs are expected to significantly boost trade and investment relations, creating new business opportunities and promoting economic growth.

Dubravka Å uica, Commissioner for the Mediterranean, highlighted that the partnerships will deepen bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation at the regional level to promote peace and stability in the Middle East.
