EWEC and Burjeel Holdings Partner to Power Abu Dhabi Healthcare Facilities with Clean Energy

Abu Dhabi: Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) and Burjeel Holdings have entered into a strategic partnership to power 22 of Burjeel's healthcare facilities in Abu Dhabi using clean energy. This initiative is verified through the provision of Clean Energy Certificates (CECs).

According to Emirates News Agency, CECs are issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) and serve as the only recognised instruments in Abu Dhabi for tracing electricity from renewable and clean generation sources. They enable companies to verify the clean energy they consume and help lower their Scope 2 emissions.

This agreement is a milestone in Burjeel Holdings' journey toward carbon neutrality and highlights the commitment of both organisations to sustainability and decarbonisation. Francois Brice, Executive Director of Commercial and Fuel Management at EWEC, emphasised the importance of reducing the Scope 2 emissions of Burjeel's medical facilities in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. He noted that this agreement reflects the growing determination of key industries to reduce their carbon footprint in alignment with the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.

Omran Alkhoori, President of Business Development and Member of the Board of Directors at Burjeel Holdings, stated that sustainability is central to their mission of delivering world-class healthcare. The partnership with EWEC marks a pivotal step in their journey towards carbon neutrality, reinforcing their commitment to environmentally responsible healthcare while contributing to the UAE's broader sustainability goals.

EWEC is actively promoting the adoption of the DoE's CEC scheme, helping a variety of organisations accelerate the decarbonisation of their operations. CECs are issued in one-megawatt-hour units, are tradable digital certificates, and comply with the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard), proving ownership of the environmental and economic benefits derived from clean energy consumption.
