Abu dhabi: The International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC) has introduced the Houbara Breeders Support Initiative at the 23rd Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX). This initiative provides a structured pathway for Emirati breeders to develop responsible and sustainable breeding operations.
According to Emirates News Agency, the initiative supports individuals who either run an existing houbara production project or are contemplating starting one. It aims to impart the necessary knowledge, practical skills, and guidance for breeding houbara in line with recognized animal-welfare, biosecurity, and operational practices.
Ekthar Wildlife Development will manage the initiative, executing its scientific and technical components. They will leverage their experience in science-based conservation solutions, serving as the strategic operating partner for IFHC's centers, programs, and projects both in the UAE and internationally.
Breeders interested in the initiative will undergo a registration and assessment process to evaluate their readiness and identify any required support. Successful applicants will participate in specialized workshops, courses, and training at the Abu Dhabi Nature Academy (ADNA), focusing on responsible houbara breeding and facility management. Certificates will be awarded upon completion of the training programs.
Eligible participants may receive breeding birds on a right-to-use basis after completing the assessment and training. They will also receive ongoing guidance and technical support as they develop their operations.
Mohamed Almotawa AlDhaheri, Acting Director General of IFHC, emphasized the importance of knowledge and responsibility in houbara breeding, which is closely linked to national heritage. He stated, "Through this initiative, we are placing our accumulated experience and expertise at the service of breeders who want to establish or develop their operations in a responsible and sustainable manner."
The initiative, managed by Ekthar, combines specialist training from the Abu Dhabi Nature Academy with technical guidance and continued engagement from IFHC. It aims to help participants develop responsible breeding operations, strengthen local capabilities, and promote appropriate standards across the sector.
Launched at ADIHEX 2026, the initiative is part of IFHC and Ekthar's broader efforts to engage with falconers, breeders, and community members involved in houbara conservation and Emirati heritage.
Interested breeders can register their interest by visiting the IFHC-Ekthar pavilion at Stand A-020 in the Atrium Area during ADIHEX 2026 or through the website. Registration is the first stage of the process and is subject to assessment and final acceptance into the initiative.
