QF Launches Genome Heroes App to Help Children Explore Science

Children across the world are to be taken on a game-playing journey into the world of genomics and DNA through Genome Heroes a new application created by Qatar Foundations Qatar Genome Program with the support of students from Qatar Foundation (QF) schools.

Featuring the characters Dana and Khalid, the game available in both Arabic and English - allows young players to learn about genome science in a fun and interactive way. Its launch was celebrated through an event at Qatar Foundation (QF) school Qatar Academy Doha, attended by 120 QF students who have been part of the Genome Heroes story from the beginning, The game is available on the Apple Store and Google Play and is designed to offer different levels suitable for children of different ages who can engage with Genome Heroes in a real-world way, such as by learning how to treat a sick pet. It is intended to allow children to build their knowledge of genome science by introducing them to one simple concept at a time.

Genomic Education Head at Qatar Genome, Dima Darwish, who is the creator of the game said: "Stemming from a globalized approach, the beautiful graphics, and the engaging story, we introduce the players to DNA - proving that science is a lot of fun. In this way, we are helping to cultivate the next generation of scientists and researchers".

"We are proud to create an educational game in Arabic. With over 400 million Arabic speakers across the world, and 25 countries where Arabic is the official language, it is a chance for all of them to understand the basics of genomics in their own language." Translational Genomics Manager at Qatar Genome Dr. Wadha Almuftah said: "The diverse ecosystem of Qatar Foundation is what made this possible - we have the vision, the scientists, the education experts, and the schools.

"Our testing phase and pilot phase were conducted with Qatar Academy schools, where the students tested and tried the game and gave valuable feedback on every chapter, and we changed some elements and fixed some mini games based on that feedback. The children were an integral part of creating this game, and will continue to be." Assistant Principal at Qatar Academy Doha Elizabeth Kennedy said, "A core educational value of Qatar Academy Doha Primary School is innovation.

"As a school under Qatar Foundations Pre-University, our students benefit from an ecosystem that fosters innovation, curiosity and collaboration. Our community was excited and honored to engage in this unique opportunity to beta test, provide feedback, and host the Genome Heroes app launch event for Qatar Foundation.

"This experience has inspired students to explore scientific content, app development and computer science. Authentic collaboration like the one between QAD and the Genome Heroes team highlights student potential's true power and possibilities, strengthening our educational foundation. Our students benefit from the unique strengths of such a dynamic and collaborative educational ecosystem." A further event to celebrate the ongoing journey of Genome Heroes will take place across QF schools in the 2023/2024 academic year.
