Abu dhabi: Space42, a UAE-based AI-driven SpaceTech firm, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia (Telkomsat), Indonesia's national satellite operator. The agreement outlines a collaborative effort to explore Direct-to-Device (D2D) connectivity opportunities.
According to Emirates News Agency, the partnership utilizes Equatys, a D2D initiative by Space42 and Viasat, which aims to facilitate seamless 5G connectivity across both satellite and terrestrial networks. This collaboration is aligned with the companies' goals to extend D2D connectivity beyond conventional infrastructure, fostering a unified communication experience.
Equatys, announced in September 2025, seeks to address connectivity gaps through a 3GPP Release 17+ Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) framework. By supporting over 100 MHz of harmonized global Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) spectrum, Equatys will allow standard smartphones and IoT devices direct satellite connectivity, providing uninterrupted 5G access in over 180 markets worldwide.
The MoU outlines potential collaborative areas in NTN and D2D connectivity, including technical integration exploration, regulatory and security cooperation, research and development, and strategic growth initiatives. The focus areas are set to ensure seamless integration between terrestrial and satellite systems, compliance with local and international standards, and advancements in 5G NTN capabilities.
Space42's CEO, Ali Al Hashemi, stated that Equatys is pivotal in addressing connectivity challenges faced by billions not served by terrestrial networks. The collaboration with Telkomsat is expected to enhance Space42's ecosystem, advancing the vision of universal connectivity.
Telkomsat's CEO, Lukman Hakim Abd Rauf, emphasized the importance of satellite-based connectivity in Indonesia's network architecture, particularly for reliable communications in remote regions. He reiterated Telkomsat's commitment to providing inclusive and sustainable services.
Equatys, operating under a shared 'space tower' model, aims to deliver cost-effective capacity to multiple operators while supporting D2D, IoT, and MSS market segments through a scalable infrastructure-grade network. By integrating this framework with Telkomsat's market access, the partnership hopes to turn universal connectivity into a shared growth opportunity, promoting digital economies and enterprise innovation.
