Abu dhabi: The United Arab Emirates is set to commemorate International Workers' Day this Friday, highlighting the significant contributions of the workforce to the nation's sustainable development. The annual observance on May 1st reflects the UAE's commitment to appreciating and supporting workers across various sectors.

According to Emirates News Agency, Dr. Abdulrahman Al Awar, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation and Acting Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, emphasized the crucial role workers play in achieving the UAE's ambitious vision. They are seen as key partners in enhancing the country's status as a global hub for living, working, and investment.

In an interview with WAM, Al Awar underscored the importance of International Workers' Day as a testament to the UAE's humanitarian values, cooperation, and social solidarity. He reiterated the nation's dedication to fostering a positive work environment that boosts productivity and simplifies business operations.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, in collaboration with public and private sector partners, is actively developing initiatives to promote appreciation, support worker welfare, and strengthen social protection. These efforts aim to enhance the labour market's flexibility and competitiveness, attract Emirati talent and global expertise, and ensure a safe and attractive work environment in line with the "We the UAE 2031" vision.

To honor the occasion, the ministry and its partners will distribute gifts to workers at various locations, including worksites, labour accommodations, and airports, as a token of recognition for their contributions.

The UAE continues to advance labour rights protection through a comprehensive legislative framework that balances worker and employer rights while ensuring a safe and stable work environment.

Between 2021 and 2025, the UAE labour market experienced remarkable growth, with the workforce increasing by 101.7 percent, skilled labour by 49.9 percent, and the number of companies by 45.7 percent. Additionally, by the end of last year, 90 percent of targeted workers had enrolled in the Unemployment Insurance Scheme.

The previous year also saw 99 percent compliance with the annual midday break policy in the private sector, aimed at safeguarding workers from heat stress. Over 10,000 rest stations were provided for delivery workers, and more than 2,700 companies registered in the labour accommodation system, benefiting approximately 1.9 million workers who enjoy high standards of comfort, health, and safety.

The UAE labour market ranks among the leading global markets in various international competitiveness indicators, further cementing its position on the world stage.
