UAE Signs Agreement with UNHCR to Support Humanitarian Response in Sudan

Abu dhabi: The UAE Aid Agency has entered into a cooperation agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to facilitate the delivery of urgent humanitarian and relief aid to the Sudanese population affected by the ongoing conflict in the country.

According to Emirates News Agency, the agreement stipulates that the UAE Aid Agency will provide US$15 million for the implementation of the project 'Protection and Assistance for People Affected by the Conflict in Sudan.' This initiative is scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026, and will continue through the end of that year. The project focuses on enhancing humanitarian response efforts for displaced individuals and those impacted by the conflict in Sudan, offering critical life-saving measures such as protection, shelter, healthcare, and education.

Rashid Al Shamsi, Executive Director of Logistics Support at the UAE Aid Agency, and Dr. Khaled Khalifa, UNHCR Senior Advisor and Representative to the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, formalized the agreement in the presence of Dr. Tareq Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency. Dr. Al Ameri emphasized that this agreement is part of the UAE's ongoing efforts to mitigate the worsening humanitarian conditions in Sudan since the conflict's outbreak. He noted that the UAE has allocated US$784 million in humanitarian aid and urgent relief to support the Sudanese people thus far.

Dr. Al Ameri further stated, "The UAE will continue to be at the forefront of global efforts to alleviate the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Sudan, founded on our moral and humanitarian obligation to stand by people affected by conflicts and natural disasters." He highlighted that these efforts align with the approach established by the late founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and reflect the directives of the UAE's wise leadership.

Over the past decade from 2015 to 2025, the UAE has provided US$4.24 billion in aid to Sudan. Furthermore, since the ongoing crisis began over two and a half years ago, the UAE has contributed US$784 million in humanitarian assistance. The UAE is recognized as the second-largest donor to Sudan after the US, as per the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The UAE reaffirms its steadfast commitment to supporting all efforts to address the crisis and to collaborate with regional and international partners, particularly in Africa, to ensure stability and peace for the Sudanese people. This commitment highlights the enduring values of humanitarian solidarity deeply embedded in the UAE's leadership and citizenry.
