London: The UK government has announced plans to implement "age or functionality restrictions" on social media platforms for individuals under the age of 16, Education Minister Olivia Bailey confirmed. The decision to enforce these restrictions will proceed irrespective of the outcomes of an ongoing consultation examining the potential harms of social media for children.
According to Emirates News Agency, the government's decision was influenced by significant pressure from the House of Lords, spearheaded by former Tory education minister and academy chain founder John Nash. Despite multiple votes by MPs to compel the Commons to accept a ban, the government has chosen to move forward with the restrictions.
The government had initiated a consultation process to evaluate access to technology for those under 16, proposing measures such as age restrictions not only on social media but also on other digital services like gaming sites and artificial intelligence chatbots. John Nash regarded the government's concession as "a huge step forward for our children's safety online."
