Yokohama: The UN Secretary-General on Wednesday reiterated his appeal for Africa to have a more significant role in global decision-making processes that impact its future, during his address at a conference in Japan dedicated to African development.
According to Emirates Press Agency, the Secretary-General emphasized Africa's potential, highlighting its youthful population, abundant natural resources, and entrepreneurial spirit at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) held in Yokohama. He noted that the theme of the conference, "Co-Create Innovative Solutions with Africa," serves as a reminder of Africa's strengths in contributing to a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world.
He urged the acceleration of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through targeted investment, comprehensive reform, and strategic partnerships. The Secretary-General identified five key areas for cooperation, including the urgent reform of global governance institutions to better reflect current global dynamics.
"Africa must have a stronger voice in shaping the decisions that affect its future," he asserted, stressing the need for overdue changes within the Security Council, where Africa currently lacks a permanent seat, and other regions also face underrepresentation.
Additionally, he called for a comprehensive overhaul of the international financial systems, labeling the existing structure as "unjust and unfair," and advocated for decisive measures on debt relief to foster equitable economic development.
