UN Urges Global Action on World Humanitarian Day

Abu dhabi: On World Humanitarian Day, the UN honoured the dedicated workers who provide life-saving aid to millions in need and regretted that more than a thousand humanitarians have been killed in the last three years and countless others narrowly survived being shot at, shelled, bombed, kidnapped, or raped.

According to Emirates News Agency, Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres emphasized the need for the international community to act on its commitments. He urged nations to respect the rules of war, ensure safe access for humanitarian workers, hold perpetrators accountable, and provide sufficient resources. World Humanitarian Day, observed annually on 19 August, serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by humanitarian workers and the need to support those affected by crises around the world.

Guterres further stated, "Humanitarian workers stand up for people in need. We must stand up for them. We must act for humanity - now." His message highlighted the critical role of humanitarian workers and the urgent need for global efforts to ensure their safety and security.

World Humanitarian Day unites partners from across the humanitarian system each year, advocating for the survival, well-being, and dignity of people affected by crises. The day also marks the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, underscoring the risks faced by those committed to humanitarian aid.
