UNAMI Announces Conclusion of Iraq Mandate by End of 2025

Baghdad: The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has announced that its mandate will conclude by December 31, 2025, at the request of the Iraqi government. UNAMI spokesperson Samir Ghattas confirmed in a press interview that there are no ongoing discussions to extend the mandate, and a final decision has been made.

According to Emirates News Agency, Ghattas emphasized that the 23 United Nations development agencies currently operating in Iraq will continue their work in the country despite the conclusion of UNAMI's mandate. This decision follows a letter submitted by the Iraqi government to the UN Secretary-General on April 8, 2024, officially requesting the mission's conclusion by the end of 2025.

UNAMI was originally established by Security Council resolution 1500 in 2003 at the request of the Government of Iraq and was revised under resolution 1770 in 2007. Since then, the mission's mandate has been extended annually.
