UNGA80: World Leaders to Discuss Framework for Inclusive, Accountable AI Governance

New york: As there is no recognised body to govern AI on a global level, world leaders will gather in New York on 25 September as part of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA80) to discuss a framework for inclusive and accountable AI governance.

According to Emirates News Agency, the UN states that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been rapidly transforming the world, influencing a wide array of areas such as self-driving cars, medical image analysis, inventory management, financial trading algorithms, virtual assistants, and real-time language translation. However, the UN notes that the benefits of AI are not evenly distributed, with many countries struggling to access tools that could potentially support development and improve the lives of their citizens.

The rapid expansion of AI brings with it a variety of risks and challenges, including threats to information accuracy and human rights, such as issues related to surveillance. The UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres emphasized that without adequate guardrails, AI could exacerbate inequalities and digital divides, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable populations. He highlighted the importance of seizing this historic opportunity to ensure AI development benefits all of humanity.
