Abu dhabi: The United Arab Emirates and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have issued a joint statement following discussions held during the working visit of Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State. Sheikh Shakhboot met with F©lix Antoine Tshisekedi, President of the DRC, to review bilateral relations and regional developments of mutual interest.
According to Emirates News Agency, the DRC and the UAE underscored the depth of their longstanding partnership, characterized by extensive cooperation and a robust record of engagement. Both nations acknowledged the steady progress made in recent years and agreed to continue strengthening and expanding their relationship.
The UAE expressed support for the DRC's assumption of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) presidency, highlighting its importance in advancing regional stability and addressing pressing regional challenges. Discussions also covered the broader security landscape, with both countries exchanging views on ways to promote de-escalation and support conflict resolution efforts across Africa and beyond.
The UAE welcomed the signing of the Doha Framework for Peace between the DRC government and the Congo River Alliance (M23 Movement), recognizing it as a pivotal step toward national reconciliation and achieving the aspirations of the DRC's people for security and comprehensive peace.
On the situation in Sudan, both sides condemned attacks against civilians and called on warring parties to ensure the protection of civilians and humanitarian personnel. They emphasized the responsibility of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to end the civil war and stressed the need for accountability and the cessation of food and aid weaponization.
The joint statement also addressed concerns over Iran's occupation of the UAE islands, calling for a peaceful settlement through negotiations or referral to the International Court of Justice. Both sides expressed concern over the lack of progress in resolving this dispute.
The UAE and DRC acknowledged the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference as a vital opportunity to advance global water efforts and recognized the UAE's contributions to water technology and innovation. They reaffirmed their commitment to deepening and expanding their bilateral relationship.
