Dubai: The eighth edition of the Vice President's Jiu-Jitsu Cup kicked off today at Shabab Al Ahli Club in Dubai, drawing a significant crowd and creating an atmosphere of excitement and enthusiasm.
According to Emirates News Agency, the championship began with official weigh-ins for all participating categories, including Under-14, Under-16, Under-18, and Adults. There was wide participation from clubs and academies across the UAE, reflecting the growing interest in the sport.
The opening day saw preliminary rounds characterized by intense competition. Athletes showcased their skills and determination in a bid to secure victories that would advance their clubs to the finals, motivated by the prospect of valuable prizes and rewards.
Mohamed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, highlighted the significant participation from clubs and academies, indicating the sport's growth locally. He emphasized that involving numerous athletes across all divisions enhances the competition. Al Dhaheri also praised Shabab Al Ahli Club for hosting the event to high standards, noting the ideal environment that elevated competition levels and spotlighted emerging talents.
Thani Majid bin Suleiman, Director of Combat Sports at Shabab Al Ahli Club, commented on the event's significance, stating that the cup brings together leading clubs and academies in strong competitions that contribute to the sport's development locally. Hosting the event aligns with the vision to advance the UAE's sports scene and reflects a commitment to nurturing future generations of athletes.
Bruno Lima, Head Coach of Al Wahda Club, expressed confidence following their previous success in the adults category. He mentioned their focus on competing strongly across all categories, supported by intensive training and preparation. Lima stated their ambition is not only to defend the adults' title but also to strengthen their presence across all divisions, reaffirming Al Wahda's status in jiu-jitsu championships.
