Bill Gates to Direct Majority of $200 bn Pledge Toward Africa’s Future

Nelson Mandela Hall: In an address today at the African Union, Gates Foundation Chair Bill Gates urged African leaders to seize the moment to accelerate progress in health and development through innovation and partnership, despite current headwinds. He announced that the majority of his US$200 billion spend over the next 20 years will go to Africa with a focus on partnering with governments that prioritize the health and wellbeing of their people.

According to Emirates News Agency, Gates addressed over 12,000 government officials, diplomats, health workers, development partners, and youth leaders in person and online. He underscored the critical role of African leadership and ingenuity in driving the continent's health and economic future. Gates emphasized the transformative potential of African leadership and the necessity of prioritizing primary healthcare to achieve significant impacts on health and wellbeing.

Gates highlighted the importance of investing in primary healthcare, noting that supporting maternal health and nutrition, as well as ensuring good nutrition for children in their early years, delivers the strongest results. He reflected on more than two decades of engagement on the continent, expressing admiration for the hard work of Africans even in resource-limited settings.

The address also focused on the transformative potential of artificial intelligence and its relevance to the continent's future. Gates praised Africa's young innovators and drew parallels to the continent's mobile banking revolution, suggesting that Africa has an opportunity to incorporate AI into the development of next-generation healthcare systems.
