UN Praises Peace Agreement Between Democratic Republic of Congo and Republic of Rwanda


Washington: The UN Chief expressed approval and support for the peace agreement signed on 27 June in Washington, D.C., between the governments of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Rwanda. This agreement was facilitated by the United States, marking a move towards resolving tensions in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and the broader Great Lakes region.



According to Emirates News Agency, the UN Chief highlighted the agreement as a crucial step towards reducing tensions and fostering peace and stability in the region. He praised the United States for its pivotal role in facilitating the process, alongside Qatar and the African Union Mediator, Faure Gnassingb© of Togo. The contributions of the five co-facilitators from the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community were also acknowledged.



The UN Chief urged the parties involved to fully uphold the commitments made in the Peace Agreement, as well as those outlined in Security Council resolution 2773 (2025). This includes the cessation of hostilities and all other agreed measures.



The United Nations, through the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the agreement’s implementation. This effort will be in close collaboration with the African Union and other regional and international partners.
