Utilities Require Global Cooperation, Sustainable Solutions: Sri Lankan Labour Minister

Abu Dhabi: Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, Sri Lankan Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Economic Development, emphasized that the utilities sector has emerged as a critical global concern impacting human well-being, necessitating sustainable and collaborative solutions.

According to Emirates News Agency, during his address at the World Utilities Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi, Fernando called for international cooperation and integrated approaches to tackle the sector's escalating challenges, portraying it as both a humanitarian and development issue. He stressed that the congress serves as a strategic platform for exchanging ideas, engaging with global stakeholders, and forging sustainable partnerships to manage complex utility-related issues effectively.

Fernando pointed out Sri Lanka's ambitious national plan to source 70 percent of its energy from renewable resources by 2030, with a long-term vision of achieving 100 percent. This initiative is in line with global efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and combat climate change.

On the topic of water resources, he acknowledged that while Sri Lanka is generally well-equipped, certain areas are increasingly facing challenges in accessing clean drinking water. He advocated for innovative solutions and stronger collaborations with institutions like the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank, along with improved community-based water management practices.

In addition, Fernando endorsed People-Public-Private Partnerships (PPPPs) as a viable model for financing and delivering essential utility infrastructure, which is crucial for supporting long-term sustainable development. He described the congress as timely and relevant, highlighting the urgency of transitioning from conventional to renewable energy sources.
